My paintings are half real and half invented. A sink that becomes a portrait of a person. A tree that is also a mother. A worm that is also a dress.

My parents are South African, though I was born in London and grew up in Belgium. Today I live on the West Coast of South Africa, the place I call home. I work mostly in acrylic, and increasingly in fabric and mixed media. The work below is arranged by year, with my age at the time.

About

Hello, I'm Monet

Painting has been my main focus for the last few years. It started in school art class and now it fills every spare hour I can find. I like acrylic because it's fast and forgiving, and I like painting things that are half real and half made up.

London is where I was born, to South African parents, and it gave me a red bus and a sky that is always slightly grey. Belgium is where I grew up, from the age of two until fifteen, and where I learned to make art in the first place. Now I live on the West Coast of South Africa, with palm trees and a beach I can walk to. It's home, and the place my family comes from. All three places turn up in my work, side by side, the way they sit together in me.
